Notices Archive (2023-2024 Season)
27 August 2024
I hope you have all had a good summer - well what we've had of one! It was lovely to catch up with some of you at the Pub evenings or organised visits like Chartwell, but the new season is already somehow upon us!
Those that were quick and managed to grab a ticket for Horizon 22, I look forward to seeing you next Monday afternoon/early evening.
For those that missed out, join us for supper at the Weatherspoon pub, The Crosse Keys, 9 Gracechurch St EC3V 0DR from around 5.30/5.45pm
Afterwards, you can explore the city as the sun goes down or capture the setting sun along the river. Or perhaps you may want to indulge your head for heights and visit the slightly lower LOOKOUT at 8 Bishopsgate (only 50 floors). The Lookout has tickets available for either 7pm, 7.30 or 7.45pm (7.15 is sold out) so get in quick and pre-book your own FREE ticket if you want to go! www.8bishopsgate.com/lookout.
The New Season in the Hall begins on Monday 9th September and is also the hand in date for the 1st Print League Competition, so time to get printing and mounting!
See you all soon
Gareth

Critique Category
Please be reminded that members may enter the 'Critique Category' in PDI and/or prints for a season (Appendix 1 from the Club Competition Rules - below). This is instead of entering the league competition for that season. Points will not be given and authors will not be revealed. The judge will be asked to spend a little longer on such images than on the competitive league entries. Please contact Ann Rayers at ann@annjackman.uk before the start of the season if you would like to be assigned on Photoentry as 'Critique' in prints and/or PDI. You will be asked at the end next season's competition year whether you wish to return to competitive league competitions.
The Critique Category does not apply to the non-league competitions (single genre/category and set subjects) which are not separated into classes, and everyone is encouraged to enter as many of these as they can. No scores are given in these (winner and certificates only).
Appendix 1: Critique Category
• The Critique Category is open to all members. Any club member in Standard or Advanced Class may choose to enter work into the Critique Category instead of their Standard or Advanced class league for a whole competition year or more. In doing so they will not lose their current Standard or Advanced Class status. However, this category is outside the usual Print or PDI League Competitions, points are not awarded for images and judges are
asked to offer helpful critiques only. Members who choose the Critique Category may enter all the Open Competitions as these do not affect the League standings.
• At the beginning of each competition season members of the Standard or Advanced Class wishing to enter the Critique Category for that competition season must notify the Print or Digital secretary as appropriate. In the absence of such notification members will remain in their competitive league (Standard, or Advanced) for that competition season.
• There will be separate Critique Categories for Prints and PDIs. A member may, for example, be in Critique Category for Prints and Standard for Class PDIs in the same year.
• A member of the Critique Category may enter up to 2 pictures per evening in line with current practice. A picture cannot be submitted for critiquing more than twice. If a member subsequently wishes to use a picture entered in the Critique Category in a league competition it should only have been submitted for critiquing once.

Since the demise of the SLF the club will now be regularly entering Surrey Photographic Association (SPA) inter-club competitions. We have sporadically entered PDI competitions over the years and some members regularly enter the Biennial Exhibition.
Members need to be aware that digital images (required for both PDI and print comps) must fit into the area 1600 x 1200 pixels. We suggest that when resizing your images to CCC competition dimensions (1400 x 1050) you always save a second copy in the 1600 x 1200 format.
The SPA may, in exceptional circumstances, ask the author to produce the original files to prove that all elements of the image are entirely the work of the author. So please make sure that you have those conveniently saved and backed up.

To all who have not titled their Nature Images according to the rules I have left Photoentry open until Monday 19th Feb so that you can correct them (i.e. must be factual and not sentimental or twee). Please go to the non-league checklist in the rules section of the website for all the information that you need. Please also check that you have followed the rule with regards to the minimal amount of post-processing allowed (also described in the rules) and remove any image that does not follow these rules.
Thank you
Ann Rayers

23 December 2023
The Competition Sub Committee has agreed that a clarification and addition is required to the competition rules. Please read the following to confirm that your entries, starting from the 1st January deadline for the next PDI league competiton, are in conformity. This is not only for club competition purposes but also means we are able to consider your entries as valid for external competitions. The additional wording is highlighted and in italics.
3 General Rules Applicable to All Competitions
3.1 All elements of all images must have been taken by the member i.e. must originate as photographs (image-captures via light sensitivity). The photographer must have been physically present with the camera at the location that the image was captured and have been responsible for all the settings. Digital, or other manipulation is acceptable in all Print and PDI competitions except Nature and Street Photography where special rules apply - see Appendix 4. Third party or professional printing, without further manipulation, is permitted.
Happy Christmas to you all,
Nigel Laflin
on behalf of the Competition Sub-Committee
