Annual Exhibition 2022 IMPORTANT CHANGE

Steve Lenaerts has informed you of the unavoidable change on Monday 25th April from Hall attendance to Zoom.

Unfortunately this coincides with handing in for

a) annual exhibition, and
b) print competition number 3.

Steve has kindly agreed to receive all of these prints at a pre-arranged time between 23rd - 25th April. (23 Angelsey Gardens; 020 8647 4022).

Those who received certificates in the Set Subject competition last week may also collect them from Steve, and if necessary transfer them to your Annual Exhibition entries. Monday 25th April is also the deadline for uploading the PDI versions of your Print Comp.3 and Annual Exhibition prints to Photoentry and paying your £6 Annual Exhibition panel fee to Tony Ogilvie. There can be no extension of handing in prints or PDI upload as we are working to a tight schedule.

A reminder that any print is eligible for the Annual Exhibition unless it has been in a previous Annual Exhibition. Your panel of 3 or 6 prints (standard club size) should hang together in a pleasing fashion - thinking not just of the pictures themselves but the mounts too. Please add a scheme of how you would like your prints hung unless you will be at the Hall to hang your own on the afternoon of Thursday 19th May.

Any queries please contact Ann Rayers at ann@annjackman.uk

The Print Finals Day where all of the SLF Inter-Club Print rounds will be taking place is on Saturday 23rd April, 1.30 – 5.30pm at Sanderstead Methodist Church.

Members are invited to enter your images via Gareth Curtis into the following Open Competitions:

Punch Bowl (Colour Prints)

Retina Cup (Mono Prints)

Jack’s Jug (PDIs)

Entries are subject to the following requirements:

Up to two images in each of the above competitions.

The re-use of images in more than one discipline in the Open Competitions is not allowed (ie the same image cannot be entered as a colour print and monochrome print and PDI)

You may not use an image (be it colour print, mono print or PDI) which has been used in an SLF Open Competition in previous years OR that has previously been awarded a Certificate in any previous SLF Federation Competition.

Note 1 Any prints not conforming to the above will not be accepted.

Note 2 The image on the accompanying digital file must be cropped to show only that part visible on the mounted print (ie within the window of the mount)

Tracey Lund

January will be a month of Zoom meetings and we start by welcoming back to Carshalton, Tracey Lund with her third WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHY talk. This time Tracey's talk features a selection of images from her trip to the Falkland Islands where she spent a month travelling around all the islands and includes, as you would expect some stories/experiences she encountered along the way. As in her previous two talks her love of and engagement with the natural world shines through.

Triptych PDI Competition Rules

An entry must comprise three distinct images of any size or shape either wholly separated or only partially overlapping and have a common theme to form a cohesive panel. A background, if included, should complement the presentation of the three images but must not become a significant fourth image. Images previously seen in CCC competitions may be used as part of your triptych. A maximum of three triptychs per member is allowed.

Following up on a query concerning the likely quality of triptychs when the competition is viewed via Zoom, Dave has suggested that we change the PDI specification from our club standard (1400x1050pixels) to an enhanced resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels.

The full explanation follows, PLEASE READ IT:

The triptych competition on 31st January 2022 requires three images on the screen at the same time and so inevitably the quality of each individual image will be less as it only occupies up to 1/3 the area.

As this is an online zoom competition, and will not be projected, we are not restricted by the usual camera club projector dimensions. Many members already have screens at home of much higher resolution, either on their PC, laptop or TV so to use our usual 1400 x 1050 pixels would result in much lower quality than many members can view.

We are therefore proposing a one off change, for this competition only, to accept images at the higher resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels. You will note that this is much higher quality than we see at the club now, and also it is widescreen which will be better for a landscape triptych. A portrait triptych is still permissible but will not benefit much from the higher quality on offer so we would not recommend it.

We are giving this advance warning so that you can prepare you images accordingly. We recommend you edit and crop in widescreen and then simply convert to 3840 x 2160 (rather than 1400 x 1050) when you create your final jpegs for submission. The changes to the editing and uploading process are actually minimal, and only in the final step, so this will not take longer or need new editing software.

Ideas and tutorials for many brands of software can be found by Googling 'create triptychs'. You might like this one, recommended by John Cheshire. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YWWhKbSTQBY

Providing you are using PS Elements there is also the offer of one to one help. Contact Steve to arrange.

Snaps and Tipples

Our meeting on Monday 13th December 2021, SNAPS AND TIPPLES, will be a chance for you to meet and greet fellow members to wish them a Happy Christmas.

THE DETAILS: Members are encouraged to meet OUTSIDE the Ruskin Road Methodist church between 7.00 and 7.15pm and proceed in an orderly fashion into Carshalton High Street for some night time SNAPS; reflections in the ponds, light trails and Christmas shop window and street decorations.

Those of you more inclined to TIPPLES could repair immediately to the Greyhound where there is plenty of outdoor shelter and where you will be joined in no time at all I suspect, by those night time SNAPPERS.

4 December 2021

Advant Fair

CARSHALTON CAMERA CLUB will have a display of members' work at the ADVENT FAIR in All Saint's Church, Carshalton Village by the ponds.

SATURDAY 4th December 10am - 4.00pm & SUNDAY 5th December 12.00noon - 4.00pm.

A team of members have signed up to man/woman the display and answer questions about the club but they'd be happy to see some familiar faces too. I understand the church does a good line in mulled wine, mince pies and other refreshments. So come along, give some support and grab a festive snack or two.

Afterlife

We welcome Dave Mason via Zoom to Carshalton. Dave is well known to many in the club and his talent for street photography is legend.

Over the past year or two Dave has been producing some lovely textured landscape images and I'm sure we will see some of these too in his talk After Life.

Our next Street Photography contest isn't until October 2022, but those paying particular attention to Dave's work on Monday could reap rewards next year.

Panels and Triptychs - HDR in a Post-HDR World

This week our speaker is Steven Galvin LRPS, who will present two talks:

1. Steven will cover the fascinating history of panels and triptychs before providing suggestions, advice, and guidelines. He displays and discusses with the audience a variety of example triptychs, for instance from a competition he recently judged, his own endeavours, plus interesting ones found on his travels.

2. In this talk Steven demonstrates how to use HDR in a constructive way to enhance images without them screaming “HDR”! He also includes a section entitled “Handheld HDR”, useful in all sorts of circumstances when using a tripod is simply not feasible. Join us at the usual time on Monday evening using this Zoom link

NATURE AND STREET PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITIONS

We have our first physical meeting of the season, where we will be presenting the Awards for the 2019-2020 season followed by our Nature & Street photography print competitions judged by Eddie Hyde ARPS.

A lot of work has gone into the organisation and safety of the meeting and things will be slightly different to the last time we met in person for a club meeting. We will be meeting in the larger Ruskin Hall at the Methodist Church, and not in the hall with the ballet class before us. We will be providing hand sanitiser upon entry and whilst members are mingling and catching up inside the hall, we ask that you wear a mask. The seats will be spaced further apart than previously and once seated it is your own decision whether you wish to keep your mask on. The interval may be shorter than normal, and we will not be providing any refreshments, so please bring along your own. There will of course be a chance for members to carry on catching up outside at the end of the evening. Other measures we will be taking, is that the doors will remain open for ventilation, (so depending on the weather you may want an extra layer.) We look forward to seeing you all in person, after such a long time.

IMPORTANT – Update on the Rules for League Competitions

The competition sub-committee and main committee have reviewed the Critique Class rules for League Competitions. It has been agreed that Critique Class will remain in place as a non-competitive 'category' for anyone in the club wishing to take a year or more out from competitive competition.

The committees also have agreed that everyone in the club should have the opportunity, should they wish, to enter a competitive class in the League Competitions. Therefore, all members currently assigned to the Critique Class will move from now into the Standard Class ready for when they wish to enter competitive competitions.

All members entering prints into one of the two competitive classes are reminded that they should upload a PDI JPEG version, or a JPEG photograph of the print itself, into Photoentry on time.  These PDI’s are not seen by the judge but are used to automatically generate the competition lists and results.  An exception is made for the Critique Category where prints are acceptable either on the hand-in day, or on the competition evening.

Ann Rayers is happy to answer any queries relating to print league competitions, and anyone requiring help with using Photoentry please contact Dave Rayers.

Important - please can any club member who wishes to place work in the Critique Category of the League Competitions for the new competition season for PDI, prints or both please inform Ann and Dave Rayers within the next week at ann@annjackman.uk.  This is so that the Photoentry can be adjusted accordingly.

MASTER PHOTOGRAPHER COMPETITION 2021-2022

A competition that takes place over a complete season with points available for eight standard genre and set subject competitions (open class) that take place over four evenings. Rationale and details can be found under ‘rules’ on the website. A short summary is given below with dates for the new season (and whether prints or PDI).

Please note: you do not have to enter all of these competitions. Each competition is a ‘stand alone’ competition for which you can be rewarded with trophies and/or certificates. In addition there will 5 points awarded to the winner of each competition and 3 points to five certificate winners – these points will automatically go towards the ‘Master Photographer’ competition.

Nature and a standard genre (alternating annually between prints and PDI) The Nature competition will fill half an evening. The other half will be another standard genre. For the 2021/22 season the competitions will be prints and the standard genre will be Street Photography. You may enter a maximum of 2 prints per genre. Date: 11th October 2021. Print handing in venue and date to be advised.

Monochrome and a standard genre (prints) The monochrome print competition will fill half an evening. The other half will be another standard genre. For the 2021/22 season the standard genre will be Cityscapes/Architecture (prints). You may enter a maximum of 2 prints per genre. Date: 22nd November 2021. Print handing in venue and date to be advised.

Portrait and a standard genre (alternating annually between prints and PDI) The Portrait competition will fill half an evening. The other half will be another standard genre. For the 2021/22 season the competitions will be PDIs and the standard genre will be Landscape. You may enter 2 PDIs per genre. Date: 21st March 2022.

Set Subjects (new subjects each year) - Prints Run as two separate competitions on the same evening with new subjects each year. For the 2021/22 season the two subjects are Element(s) or Elemental and Revolution. You may enter 2 prints per set subject. Date: 11th April 2022.

Notes and Rules

1. The specific rules for the Monochrome, Portrait and Nature competitions must be adhered and are found in the current Club Competition Rules - note the revised Nature rules for the new season can be found here.

2. The work does not have to be new and any previous league competition entries are eligible.

3. An image (print or PDI) cannot be re-entered into a competition of the same genre in another year.

4. An image (print or PDI) can be entered into more than one genre at any time (except when competitions fall on the same night) e.g a monochrome portrait could be entered into both the monochrome and portrait competitions.

5. PDIs, including PDIs of all prints, must be uploaded by the published hand-in dates.

Any queries then please contact Ann Rayers at ann@annjackman.uk

4 September 2021

Annual Exhibition 2021

This will be a wonderful opportunity to meet each other in person and enjoy some of our print work so please add this date to your diaries.

For those wishing to enter it is essential that you upload the PDI versions of your prints via Photoentry by the deadline as this will provide us with details for the catalogue, and will be used for online exhibition that will be published on our website soon after the physical exhibition.

IMPORTANT - any print from any year can be entered into the AE provided it has not been in any previous AE including last year's PDI online Exhibition. There is no requirement for a theme but rather a panel of six prints presented and hung in a pleasing and artistic manner.

A number of members have already committed to entering a panel of 6 prints (usual 50 x 40cms) but if anyone else would like to enter a panel then please let me know (Ann Rayers) Please find below the details for entry and attendance at our Annual Exhibition which will be in the usual venue.

Deadlines for those entering prints into the Annual Exhibition

Friday 6th August - Photoentry to open for PDI versions of your prints

Covid safety

The hanging of the exhibition will be done by a small group of committee/club members (TBD). The exhibition will be well spaced allowing for safe viewing. The Church will have open doors for good ventilation. If visitors or members are wearing a mask and approach you then that should be a signal to you as club members to wear a mask too. We will not have the usual cafe area this year but will have a raffle or tombola.
