Refreshments at Club Meetings

For more than 10 years the price of tea or coffee has been 50p and we have served it in a disposable cup.

Starting from 1 April 2019 you will still be able to get a tea or coffee for 50p and you will still be able to get a disposable cup. However, if you want a disposable cup the price will increase to £1. This reflects the environmental harm that the continued use of disposable cups does. In the last ten years we have thrown away about 10,000 cups ! This is not sustainable and has to end.

Therefore, from 1 April we encourage everyone to bring their own mug to meetings and to take it home afterwards. The price to fill it with tea or coffee will be 50p. The supply of biscuits will continue as before whether you bring your own mug or use a disposable.

Darren Pullman has ordered a special mug with the club’s logo on. These cost £7 each. Please contact him if you want one.

Monochrome competition

Handing in is the 18th February. Please be reminded that any monochrome print can be entered provided it has not been entered in the Monochrome competition before or the Annual Exhibition (AE) Monochrome section when the AE was a competition. For example, a monochrome print that has been entered previously in a league competition is eligible for entry into the Monochrome competition. Three can be entered although all the 'thirds' may be withdrawn if the entry is high. Please mark clearly which is your third.

Portrait and Nature competitions

These are fast approaching too and the same rules as above apply regarding eligibility. A FAQ has been whether a mono portrait is eligible for both the Mono and Portrait competitions and the answer is yes.

Please visit the club competition rules before entering competitions as these have evolved over the years and are worth revisiting. I would like to point out the very important rules below:

3.1 Every element of all images must have been taken by, and be the work of the member
i.e. must originate as photographs (image-captures via light sensitivity)
3.2 Members must hold the copyright. No other material is permissible in any digitally
produced image, including copyright-free material from the internet. A photograph found to
fall outside these rules will lose all points associated with it. The exception is in audio-visual
competitions in which some material not owned by the member (but without copyright
restrictions) may be included.
3.3 Members must ascertain that subjects of portraits are willing to have these displayed
unless clearly candid.

Please send any queries to Ann Rayers at ann@annjackman.uk

SLF Competitions

I'm very pleased to announce that we have qualified for the semi-finals in both PDIs and monochrome prints this year, and have reached the Plate finals in colour prints. Please try to support your club in these external competitions as it is an excellent way, not only to see our panels but also those of other competing clubs. Also please support the club on Finals Day on Saturday 27th April. Of course we don't know yet whether or not we will reach the Mono print or PDI finals but we already have six certificate winners that will appear in various competitions . These are,

PDI 'Evening Drink' by Ann Rayers
PDI 'Celebration' byPeter Rowley
Mono Print 'Storm' by Doug Crockett
Colour Print 'The King's Messenger' by Doug Crockett
Colour Print 'St. Anne's Lutheran Church' by John Cheshire
Colour Print 'Car Park by Darren Pullman

We also have further opportunities to gain certificates in the two semi-finals.

Full results of the competitions so far can be found in the usual place on the Website under SLF. http://www.carshaltoncameraclub.org.uk/members/results.html

Dates
Wednesday 20th February - Semi-Final B at Cheam Camera Club for both our Monochrome and PDI panels

Wednesday 27th February - Plate Final at Beckenham Camera Club for our Colour Prints

We are allowed to change some photos in the panel from the rounds if we wish, and we let the authors know beforehand if they have an image/print in the competition.

You can view last season's panels on our website here.

This is a public area so we do not reveal our panels until all the competitions are over for the season so the best way to see our current panels is to attend the SLF competitions.

Photostories

I hope that you enjoyed the first Photostory last September when some members demonstrated the new concept very well. I have already had 2 or 3 offers for the next one on the 18th February. Please contact me (Ann Rayers) if you would like to do one (even those who have already offered).

Photostories up to 10-12 mins

Photostories communicate a narrative in a number of sequential photographs depicting a theme or event. It is not a portfolio of 'best pictures'. If prints they may be displayed as a panel of prints or a sequence with the author providing a narrative. Your Photostory may also be displayed as a sequence of projected images with either captions or the author providing the narrative. It is also permissible to make an audio-visual (A/V) with a strong storyline (with or without captions) put to music or recorded narrative, or a photoharmony sequence with a sequence of pictures put to music. These would need to be compiled with suitable software such as 'picstoexe'.

All Photostories must be new work. The Digital Secretary requires that all PhotoStories for projection are submitted at least a week before the Photostory evening - they cannot be accepted on the evening. All projected Photostories must be presented from the club laptop and not from the author's personal computer.

Please note that there is a limit of one Photostory per member per evening (even if the story is less than 10-12 mins) although two may be considered if the number of Photostories being offered for the evening
is low.

Any offers or queries should be sent to Ann Rayers ann@annjackman.uk

Master Photographer Competition 2019

You are invited to participate in next season's event which will be held on Monday, 14th January 2019 when the judge will be DAVE MASON. Again some interesting new categories have been introduced which we hope will stretch and encourage you to use your creativity and imagination.
You must produce one picture to interpret each of FIVE out of SIX subjects (one opt-out is allowed). Please note that this year the competition will be for PDI ONLY.
The images should comply with our usual Rules for PDI competitions, ie JPEG format, sRGB colour space, with resolution 1400 (max width) x 1050 (max height, including for vertical/portrait format images).

Name the picture files as – Subject No. [underscore] Title [underscore] Your Name

for example: 1_Stars in your Eyes_Gerald Kitiyakara.jpg

The six categories for this year are:

Send your five images to the usual PDI entry email address: pdi@carshaltoncameraclub.org.uk

1. Bokeh
Out of focus disks or shapes of white or coloured light, which can make up the whole image or form the background to a main subject. An image with bokeh can be achieved in camera at the picture taking stage, or as a composite with separate layers for the bokeh image and the main subject. Note that all component images in a composite must have been taken by the photographer.

2. Shadow(s)
Including figure(s) and/or object(s) in shadow(s)

3. Intentional Camera Movement (ICM)
An image in which normally static objects/elements show movement or blurring, akin to panning.
The main objective is for the effect to have been achieved in the camera at the time of taking the
image, NOT by post camera processing in computer.(although editing such as cropping is allowed)

4. Fill the Frame
An image in which your main subject fills the frame allowing no background.

5. Repetition
Patterns come to mind, but there may be other elements which are repeated.

6. Night Photography
Capture night time and the associated atmosphere, illumination, in a town or in the country, by the sea, wherever.

Please note that the handing-in date for your PDIs is Monday 10th December 2018.

ALL WORK SHOULD BE NEW AND MUST NOT HAVE BEEN ENTERED IN ANY CLUB COMPETITIONS BEFORE

Each image will be marked out of ten and the outright winner will receive the Master Photographer trophy. In the event of a tie the judge will be invited to review the complete panels of the members concerned and decide who the winner should be. A special certificate will be awarded to the person gaining the highest points in the class not represented by the winner. Our judge will be asked to deduct marks from any picture which in his view does not properly fit the category.

Best of luck, enjoy the challenge!
