SLF Finals Day - Individual Entries
Most of you will know that our club belongs to the Federation of South London Photographic Societies (SLF for short) and that the SLF has a ‘Finals Day’ each year to sort out the winners of the inter-club competitions.
However, Finals Day also has an open competition which any individual member of an SLF club (ie US!) can enter.
The categories are:
Open Monochrome Print
Open Colour Print
Open PDI
Entries are £1 per image with a maximum of two images per category.
Note that all prints must be on 40 x 50 cm mounts - prints not conforming to this size will not be accepted. Also note that the re-use of images in more than one discipline in the Open Competitions is not allowed.
All prints must have the print title, author, club and club reference letter clearly marked on the back.
A digital file must accompany ALL prints.
The images have to be handed in on March 6th, which means, being realistic, that entries must be handed in at the club by Monday, Feb 24th. Finals Day itself is on April 26th.
PDIs should be sent to Dave Rayers and Prints handed to Mike Dales (with the appropriate fees).
The PDI entries and digital files that accompany prints must all be sized to fit within 1024 x 768 pixels.
Please do consider having a go. Entered images will be hung so it is a good opportunity, win or lose, for people to see your work.

ANNUAL EXHIBITION COMPETITION 2014
Click here to download an entry form
There are few minor
changes to the rules this year.
1) In the newly published rules
available on the website it is stated 'Each member may submit up to 8
Open Prints and 2 Natural History Prints. However, if a member
submits more than 6 Open Prints (i.e. 7 or 8) then these additional
prints must be entries in for the Monochrome and/or Portrait
competitions’.
Q: Am I
limited to how many Monochrome or Portrait prints that I enter?
A: No you are not limited up to the total entry limit of 8.
Q: Which pictures will be hung in my personal panel?
A: The first 6 pictures numbered (subject to the usual acceptance rules
of the competition).
Q: Will my 7th and 8th Mono/Portrait pics be hung?
A: This first year will be a trial year so we are uncertain of the
popularity of this. However, at least any certificate winners will
be hung separately from your main panel and appropriately titled and
named.
Q: I have won certificates/awards for some of my prints in various CCC
competitions over the years. Are they eligible for the AE?
A: Yes, provided they fit the new mount size guidelines and have
not been entered in any previous AE
2) The Natural History section
remains unaffected with mount sizes being one of two given sizes (in
rules).
Q: Is a Natural History picture
previously entered into the Open Print section of an AE eligible for
this year's Natural History section, or, is a Natural History print
entered this year in the NH section eligible for the Open section of a
future AE.
A: No
3) There is no longer to be a
certificate for the 'Best Record' print
4) Size of mounts for the Open
competition. As stated in the rules prints should be mounted on
boards not greater than 50x40cms. For AE purposes only, the six
open print sizes must all be the same size of your choice. This
will improve the overall presentation of the exhibition.
Q: Smaller prints often look better
on mounts smaller than 50x40cms. Do I have to mount on full size
mounts?
A: No, you can present your work on any size mount up to that
limit. If a successful picture is later considered by the
competition sub-committee for our SLF panel then you maybe asked to
remount on 50x40cm board.
5) The maximum number of Open DPIs
that can be entered is reduced from 8 to 6 in line with that for prints
Guidelines for the AE (these are not
rules but should be followed where possible)
The main purpose of the AE is to
showcase our work to the public and peers in the camera club world and
therefore we should take care in choosing our print displays. We
are therefore issuing the following guidelines.
The six open prints should be chosen
with a view to providing a panel that is visually pleasing. This refers
to picture content, mount colour and the distribution between
horizontals and verticals. A symmetrical display usually works best.
Q: I usually just enter my most
successful prints from league/other competitions - is this still O.K?
A: Yes provided the mount sizes are the same. However, we
recommend that you pay attention to the new guidelines in terms of a
cohesive display.
Q: What colour mounts work best and
should all the mount colours within my panel be the same?
A: That is personal choice and may depend on your subject matter but
usually it is recommended to mount on neutral colours or black.
It may work best to restrict yourselves to a maximum of two colours
only and hang symmetrically.
Q: Can my pictures be a mixture of
vertical or horizontal?
A: Yes, but consider your overall panel when choosing your pictures
and formatting. Please note that full size verticals do appear
more 'squashed' when hung on our display panels.

SURREY PHOTOGRAPHIC ASSOCIATION
Biennial Exhibition
2nd – 26th April 2014
GUILDFORD HOUSE GALLERY
The SPA Biennial Exhibition will be held this spring. It is an exhibition to which all SPA clubs are entitled to enter with Colour, Mono and Nature classes for prints, and Open and Nature categories for PDIs. The selection will take place in February and the standard is very high - whether or not you decide to submit, we highly recommend going to Guildford to see the exhibition.
If you would like to submit entries the rules are attached for your attention as well as an entry form which must be filled out. We do encourage you to ‘have a go’ – our track record for acceptances is quite good and there is something very nice about seeing your work exhibited in a proper gallery.
Please be aware however that you should only submit your very best entries and they should be mounted/presented according to the attached rules. In our normal league competitions we are only comparing our work with our peers in our own club – it is a step up to compete with the other clubs of the region. Please do consider entering. There will certainly be at least some submissions from our club.
The fees for entering are: £6.00 for the first class entered and £5.00 for each additional class. Each entrant can submit up to four images in each class.
As we need to deliver the images for selection, the deadline for getting the entry form, your images and the appropriate fees to Ann is January 24th at the very latest.
If you have any further questions please see Ann or Mike.

Members' Gallery Portfolios
We are making some changes to our website. One change involves the Gallery. This area of the website is public and seeks to showcase the best of our work.
At the moment you can see the panels that the club has entered in SLF competitions. This will remain and, in addition, every member of the club will be given space for five of their best pictures. These pictures can be from any time and have originally been shown as prints or DPIs. It is up to each member to make a selection.
As you progress and take better pictures you will be able to update your portfolio.
Please email your chosen pictures to:
darrenpullman@mac.com Alternatively you can put them in a DropBox and send the link.
Please format them in the same way that you do for DPI entries and print entries.

Interclub Competitions Selection Process
Prints
The competition sub-committee selects the best of the club’s pictures to represent us in interclub competitions. At the moment we have an ad hoc method of selecting prints based on what scores well, what is remembered as being good and what our print secretary holds on to after a competition.
When selecting our DPI panels for interclub competitions we have access to ALL of the entries submitted on the club’s laptop. This means the sub-committee can make a selection from every picture submitted regardless of the score it received or whether anyone remembered it on the night.
We would now like to extend this idea to Prints. Obviously it would be impractical to store all the prints submitted over the year but it’s quite easy to store a jpg of the images.
So, starting this year we are asking everyone who submits prints to any of our print competitions to also prepare digital copies.
- They should be the same size as a DPI competition entry ie within 1400 x 1050 pixels.
- They should use the following file naming convention: Title of the Picture_Your Name.jpg
In the subject of the email please state which competition the pictures first appear in. eg
- Print League Competition No.
- Master Photographer Competition
- Monochrome Print of the Year Competition
- Set Subject Competition
- Annual Exhibition
Please send them to our new email address which has been set up specifically for this purpose (and only this purpose):
If you intend to use the same print in more than one competition then it’s only necessary to send it once.
This new development is voluntary. If you don’t send a jpg of your print it will not affect your entry in anyway. It will, however, mean your print is less likely to be considered for inclusion in any interclub competitions, simply because the selection panel will have to rely on their memory of the picture rather than having a copy in front of them.

Set Subject Print Competition
The Set Subject Print Competition will be on 14 April 2014. This year the theme is Three.
You can interpret it in any way you like but remember your fellow club memebers will be judging not just the quality of the picture but how well it fits the subject.

The British at Play
Twenty pictures were entered. 31 members voted in the first round and 28 voted in the post discussion vote. A few members missed some of the pictures when voting. For this reason I have calculated the average score each picture received. That way nobody is disadvantaged by only receiving 30 votes instead of 31. It also means we can make a direct comparison between each round of voting.
Overall there was little difference in the voting. The top three pictures in each round were the same with just the second and first place swapping.
Three pictures received the same ranking. Nine pictures, nearly half, changed by no more than one place (whether up or down). 13 pictures changed by no more than two places. Just three pictures changed significantly; one was up by 6 places, one was down by 8 places and one was down by 9 places. The remaining 17 changed by no more than 4 places.
